Seek the Lord and His Strength

Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually! -Psa 105_4

Seek the LORD and His strength; seek His presence continually! – Psalm 105:4

Lord, Your word gives me this invitation, so I come. I came yesterday, and You provided the strength I needed, so here I am again, seeking You.

I know Your strength is the result of Your presence, so I seek that first and foremost. You are the One I want. If I could have Your power without having You, I would instead remain weak with You, but I know Your presence and strength cannot be separated.

I seek Your presence, not in this moment only, but through the entirety of my day. If at any moment I begin to feel independent of You, remind me of my need. You are my all in all, Jesus. You are my everything.

Be with me through this day, and let Your strength be seen in all that I need to face. For I know, in that way, all that needs to be accomplished will be accomplished. In that way, may I glorify You and enjoy You forever.

He Stands Between the Mighty and the Weak

He stands between the mighty and the weak!

O LORD, there is none like you to help, between the mighty and the weak. – 2 Chronicles 14:11

I am weak, oh Lord, and you are mighty. Today, I have been brought low, and in my weakness, I must face the day. The work and responsibilities ahead of me seem daunting. In light of my limited strength, they are mighty, yet You stand between the mighty and the weak. You are my strength.

I know this because the most significant contrast between might and strength that I have experienced was when I stood before You in my sinfulness. The Omnipotent One at enmity against His defiant and foolish creature. The Lord of all of heaven against mere dust.

First, You devastated my defiance by showing me my sinfulness. Then you let me lay prostrate in the mire so that I could see what I rightly deserved from Your hand. In Your justice, your bow was bent, arrows waiting, and I had no defense. Yet even there, You stood between the mighty and the weak by sending Your Son.

Jesus stepped in, and You took the arrows of Your wrath, directed them at Him and without mercy, let them fly. He willingly, without a word took the full brunt of what I deserved; satisfying Your righteousness and justice. With your quiver empty and your bow at rest, You gathered me up and called me Your own. Oh, what manner of love it is that we should be called sons and daughters of God.

Now, as I go out in my weakness to face the full strength of this day, I know all will be well. In my deficiency, You will be my abundance, and the mighty will fall. When the day comes that You allow the mighty to overtake me, it will be because you will be delivering me in the most profound way yet. You will be setting me free from this fallen world to live with You for all eternity.

The Benefits of the Lord

Benefits

Forget not all his benefits. – Psalm 103:2

Jesus, Your benefits are innumerable. They are as infinite as You. You forgive all our iniquities. They are too numerous for us to count, but where sin abounds, Your grace abounds all the more. The wrath we deserve, You bore on the cross.

Oh, Father, You heal all our diseases. How many times have our bodies been ill and then restored back to health? We are not able to recall them all. We also know that one day we may face a disease that will take our life. We may even be fighting that illness right now, but even that will be healed when You resurrect us. Though we are sown perishable, we will be raised imperishable.

Lord, You redeem our life from the pit. You save us from snares that have been laid for us by our enemies, and much more frequently, You deliver us from the tombs we have dug ourselves in our sinfulness. We dug the graves of sin and then fell in. You do not hold our iniquities against us. You rescue us from ourselves. We also know that the way you sometimes deliver us is through the illnesses already mentioned. When we place our hope and confidence in the things of this world, You show us our frailty and folly through bodily weakness and point us back to You. In one movement You heal our diseases and rescue us from worldliness.

With steadfast love You crown us. This crown of love is what moves you to do everything else already mentioned. You satisfy us with good, and You are the preeminent good. The source of all other goods. You give Yourself to us, and there is no higher gift. No greater satisfaction can be found. As You give Yourself to us, You lift our heads, and our youth is renewed like the eagles.

You are the Gospel, oh, Lord. It is You we desire, and You fulfill that desire with a satisfaction that promises more as it both quenches and stirs our thirst. May we never forget Your benefits. May we be ever mindful of You.

We love you, Jesus.

Keep My Eyes From Worthless Things

I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. – Psalm 101:3

Lord, our days are often spent looking upon worthless things, and this is a great sin. We ask for your forgiveness. This world is continuously setting them before us. From T.V. movies, and billboards, to social media, they seem to be everywhere we look. To make matters worse, our hearts often long for them. We are drawn to them to such a degree, that even if the spirit is willing, the flesh is weak.

We know, as you have told us, that the eyes are the windows to our souls. Where we direct them not only reveals the condition of our hearts but moves our hearts to desire what we look upon more earnestly.

Help us, Lord, to set our eyes on what is holy and worthy; to set our eyes on things unseen. For until we turn our eyes to what is truly beautiful and worthy, we will be held captive to the lesser things.

Lord, give us the strength to pull our eyes from the unholy distractions of this world and place them upon You. As we look to You, sanctify our hearts, so when the worthless things are once again before us, we will see them with holy eyes and immediately turn away.

Jesus, you are true beauty, and you are true worth. Be the center of all our thoughts and desires.  We love you.

Considering Our Calling

APrayerLord, You are marvelously powerful, and Your power moves in ways unseen to most of us. No grandiose displays of might are needed to move the hearts of men, though they are all around us in nature. It took a hidden call to our hearts.

We had built fortresses of wisdom to protect ourselves from You, but you destroy the wisdom of the wise and the discernment of the discerning (1 Cor. 1:19), And You did it through the message of the cross. A word that is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to those who are being saved it is the power of God (1 Cor. 1:18).

We know, from your word, that the natural man does not accept this message because it is spiritually discerned (1 Cor. 2:14). We understand that our sin had us bound so that we were unable to receive your truth without you first breaking the bonds of our corrupt natures, false wisdom, and arguments.

We praise You, Lord, for Your unseen power that set us free and gave us new birth. As we consider our calling, that miraculous work of grace in our hearts, we know it is because You chose us (1 Cor. 1:26-27), and not because of any good in us. It was entirely of Your mercy and grace.

We still live in a world that considers your truth foolish. Make us willing to bear the reproach of the world by taking up our cross daily by conforming us to Your image. For, as we spread the good news of the gospel, we know You will be secretly, and mightily, calling others to Yourself as well.

With grateful hearts, we praise You for Your wonderful work of power that set us free from the slavery of our own sinful natures. You are gloriously merciful.

A Prayer for Order

samuel-martins-631378-unsplashAnd David organized them in divisions corresponding to the sons of Levi:  – I Chronicles 19:15

Lord, we are naturally prone to disorder and sin, and there is so much in this life that is out of place. Help us order our spiritual lives first, for if they are out of order, how will we be able to order anything else rightly. Primarily, Lord, I pray you help us order our loves with you having the preeminence. Once that occurs, then all the other loves will fall into place, and until that happens, no other love will be loved properly.

From there, help us to bring order to our families and work in a way that brings you glory and us joy.  May we see effectiveness in all we attempt, and holiness in all we do.  You are our true desire, Lord, and You are not a God of chaos, but of order and peace. May our lives reflect that, as well as the institutions in which we function. For we desire to be conformed to your image and see your kingdom come.

The Deeps

Lord Jesus, give me a deeper repentance, a horror of sin, a dread of its approach. Help me chastely to flee it and jealously to resolve that my heart shall be Thine alone.

Give me a deeper trust, that I may lose myself to find myself in Thee, the ground of my rest, the spring of my being. Give me a deeper knowledge of Thyself as saviour, master, lord, and king. Give me deeper power in private prayer, more sweetness in Thy Word, more steadfast grip on its truth. Give me deeper holiness in speech, thought, action, and let me not seek moral virtue apart from Thee.

Plough deep in me, great Lord, heavenly husbandman, that my being may be a tilled field, the roots of grace spreading far and wide, until Thou alone art seen in me, Thy beauty golden like summer harvest, Thy fruitfulness as autumn plenty.

I have no master but Thee, no law but Thy will, no delight but Thyself, no wealth but that Thou givest, no good but that Thou blessest, no peace but that Thou bestowest. I am nothing but that Thou makest me. I have nothing but that I receive from Thee. I can be nothing but that grace adorns me. Quarry me deep, dear Lord, and then fill me to overflowing with living water.
